FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT’S MADISON
Most visitors don’t realize Frank Lloyd Wright and Madison had a lifelong, colorful and frequently acrimonious relationship. Wright grew from boyhood to manhood in the 9 years he lived in Madison before he took off for Chicago to seek fame and fortune. And he retained many ties to the Madison community during the 50 years he lived at Taliesin, only about an hour away. read more
Wright designed over 30 structures for friends and colleagues in Madison. Of these, 12 were eventually built and 10 remain. This guided tour includes some 25 stops with a Frank Lloyd Wright connection. Visit Wright’s Unitarian Meeting House, a National Historic Landmark, and one of the 17 structures identified by the AIA as the best examples of Wright’s impact on American culture. See Monona Terrace and, with enough lead time, Jacob 1. Drive by many of his other buildings.
The charge for this tour is $75 an hour, 2-hour minimum for up to 5 guests and a maximum charge of $350 a day. Some sites such as FUS or Jacob I require an additional entrance fee per guest. If you are interested in including a trip to Taliesin in this tour, additional mileage charges, time charges and entrance fees will apply.
March Schweitzer, owner of Madison City Tours, has self-published a guide entitled, “That’s Wright! The Madison legacy of Frank Lloyd Wright” in honor of Wright’s 150th birthday in 2017. This self-guided, driving tour of Wright’s life and works in Madison is available for purchase from this website and is intended for FLLW enthusiasts who want to do the Wright tour on their own.
